July 4 commemorates the catalyst that turned colonies into a nation and farmers into soldiers. Through violent battles and long winters, our country was forged by men and women who chose independence as soldiers, spies and sailors. These individuals fought for the ability to create an idea – where people could be free to pursue life, liberty and happiness.
Although many consider Memorial Day as the official kickoff to summer and celebrate with a day of grilling with friends and family, this national holiday was created to honor the sacrifice of America’s fallen soldiers.
More than 20,000 children have lost a parent or loved one in the line of duty over the past 40 years, May 13 has been set aside as Children of Fallen Patriots Day to honor the children whose lives were forever altered because of their parents’ service to our country.
April is the Month of the Military Child. With all the support that veterans receive, it is easy to sometimes overlook the sacrifices made by veteran family members. This month was established and is sponsored by the Departed of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA). Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger created the Month of the Military Child in 1986, and the DoDEA has honored it ever since. During the Month of the Military Child, we highlight how important the family and children are for our service men and women.
