Veterans’ Salute

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the world. Activities in the outdoors are some of the safer forms of enjoyment that are available to all citizens. Fortunately, West Virginia is not short on outdoor activities.

For the veterans in West Virginia, you may not know about  a benefit extended by West Virginia State Parks called the “Veterans’ Salute.”

The Veterans Salute allows veterans and active duty military personnel a year-round 10% off discount on all standard lodge roomscabins, and campsites operated by West Virginia State Parks*. West Virginia State Parks also have other unique places to stay that range from yurts to fire towers.

Additional discounts and offers are available seasonally. These include discounted or even free park entry and access to amenities.

To access the Veterans’ Salute offer, veterans should use code Vets10 when making their reservation and must present a valid military ID, a DD214,  or WV driver’s license with “veteran” designation upon check-in.

We are fortunate to live in a place with countless opportunities for outdoor recreation and relaxation. Operated by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, there are many state parks from which veterans may chose.

More than just places of outstanding natural beauty, many of the Mountain State’s natural parks have rich and varied histories. Once used as forts, lumbering railroads, battle sites, mills, and more, each site is as unique as the activities they now offer—some historically-based, others modern. Visitors can find world-class golfing, hiking, biking, and skiing, and more.

Outdoor recreation is proven to benefit veterans. Not only does it encourage exercise, but it is also known to improve mental health as well. It helps to unplug and bask in nature. Be that on the trout stream or the golf course.

Now all that’s left is to figure out which one to visit first. For a list of West Virginia state parks, visit: https://wvstateparks.com/
